Movable Portions of the Liturgy

Tone 2 Troparion        (Resurrection)

When Thou didst descend to death, O Life immortal,/ Thou didst slay hell with the splendor of Thy Godhead./ And when from the depths Thou didst raise the dead,

all the powers of heaven cried out:// “O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to Thee!

Tone 1 Troparion       (The Meeting of our Lord in the Temple)

Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Full of Grace!/ From you shone the Sun of Righteousness, ^Christ our God,/ enlightening those who sat in darkness./ Rejoice and be glad, O righteous Elder,/ you accepted in your arms the ^Redeemer of our souls,/ Who grants us the Resurrection!

Glory… Tone 3          Kontakion     (from the Lenten Triodion)

I have recklessly forgotten Your glory, O Father;/ and among sinners I have scattered the riches which You gave me./ And now I cry to You as the Prodigal:/ “I have sinned before You, O merciful Father;/ receive me a penitent,// and make me as one of Your hired servants!”

Now and Ever… Tone 1 Kontakion (The Meeting of our Lord in the Temple)

By Your Nativity You sanctified the Virgin’s womb/ and blessed Simeon’s hands, ^O Christ God./ Now You have come and saved us through love./ Grant peace to all Orthodox Christians,// O only Lover of Man!

          Tone 2  Prokeimenon

The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. (Ps 117/118:4) v: The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over to death. (Ps 117/118:18)  Tone 3 Prokeimenon            (Song of the Theotokos)

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.  (Lk 1:46-47)

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Brethren, 12All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Tone 2 Alleluiav: May the Lord hear you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! (Ps 19/20:1) v: Save the King, O Lord, and hear us on the day we call!  (Ps 19/20:9) Tone 8         v: Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation! (Lk 2:29)

Gospel: Luke 15:11-32 (Parable of the Prodigal Son)

(Instead of “It is truly meet …,” we sing:) Tone 3

O Virgin Theotokos, hope of all Christians, protect, preserve, and save those who hope in you!  In the shadow and letter of the Law, let us, the faithful, discern a figure: every male [child] that opens the womb is holy to God.  Therefore we magnify the firstborn Word of a Father Who has no beginning,// the Son firstborn of a Mother who had not known man.
